Here are a few of our success stories.
Michelle started her journey as a TY-2013 participant receiving Supported Employment Services. Michelle always had a desire to obtain a job in the child care field but had no experience. Michelle's service provider assisted Michelle in making her dreams a reality. Michelle was provided with the opportunity to obtain a CPR & First Aid Certification, Tuberculosis Vaccine, fingerprinting and work Uniforms through her Supported Employment service provider. The most admirable moment through Michelle's TY Success Story was the opportunity that was provided to Michelle was her obtaining her internship at a notable and licensed Daycare Center. Michelle's efficient work ethics then led her to becoming a full time employee as a teacher assistant at the daycare center. Michelle still remains employed with the daycare center to date.
A young man, wheelchair bound, told the Maryland Community Connection Executive Director "real men work". This man is now employed full-time in the community. Being able to contribute to his household is his demonstration of moving towards independence and being a responsible adult.
In 2006, Maryland Community Connection began serving a shy 11-year-old boy who resides in Oxon Hill. Now in 2020, that boy has blossomed into an engaging man active in the community, works full time, built and monitors his personal budget, acquired his driver's license after three attempts, and has started a housing purchase program to buy his own home.
These successes may have not happened without assistance from the outstanding direct care staff to help provide quality services, which are the pillars of supporting these individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities moving towards independence.
